Welcome to our Website

The Tottenham Civic Society was established in April 2006 following mounting public concern about inappropriate redevelopment proposals to the Tottenham High Road Historic Corridor and a desire for something better.  We hope that members and visitors to our website will enjoy it as both a source of information and a useful resource for discovering Tottenham.

The Society's aims (as set out in its constitution) are as follows:

a trio of restored shop fronts near Bruce Grove

  1. To promote high standards of planning and architecture in Tottenham;
  2. To educate the public in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of Tottenham;
  3. To secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic, environmental or public interest in Tottenham; and
  4. To work to improve the quality of life for everyone in Tottenham;
  5. To encourage the appropriate and sustainable regeneration of Tottenham.

The photograph to the right of restored shop fronts on Tottenham High Road shows what can be done if the will is there.

Our chief concern at present is the planning application by Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (THFC) to redevelop their stadium at White Hart Lane.  Among other things, this involves the demolition of an important complex of 18th and 19th century buildings along the High Road.  Some of the buildings are locally listed for their conservation interest and two of them, Fletcher House and Warmington House, are nationally listed as Grade 2 for their historical and architectural interest.  We are concerned that insufficient consideration has been given to the retention and renovation of these buildings, and we are supported in this by SAVE Britain's Heritage, who point out that "by preserving these 15 buildings, removing rear extensions and clearing unattractive later 20th-century infill, it would be possible to maintain the important and distinctive linear character of the High Road, whilst creating permeability between it and the stadium to allow large numbers of match-goers to move freely and safely to and from the ground".

SAVE has a page on its website giving more information about this alternative proposal, with a link to the planning application on Haringey's website and information about how to respond.  We encourage all Society members and all who share our aims to make their views known about the proposed demolition of these currently neglected but eminently restorable and attractive buildings.
